Sunday to Sunday

“Sunday to Sunday,” October 2018 Update

In early October, our preaching journey took us to a small church on California’s central coast to meet Father Matt Pennington, the pastor of the Nativity of our Lady Catholic Community in San Luis Obispo.

The parish is nestled between mountains in a lush landscape dotted with cattle, vineyards, and orchards. And, shares the same exit off of CA 101 with Cal Poly State University.

Ten years ago, I appeared on a panel at a national conference on preaching – where was I asked to address how the media and Sunday worship might be affected by advances in new media technology.

I described how a parish might develop their website, use email to contact parishioners, and how large screen video could display lyrics to music, spark up the announcements at the end of Mass, and even record the homily for outreach and evangelization. Certainly, such efforts require training, up-to-date equipment, and a team devoted to this work.

Such a parish now exists at Nativity — thanks to the efforts of Father Matt and Deacon Tom O’Brien, a permanent deacon, and musical director who manages the IT and social media — a “man for all media.” Check out the Nativity parish website: Nativity of Our Lady Catholic Community

The aim of “Sunday to Sunday” is to highlight the accomplishments of outstanding preachers. Gifted preachers like Father Matt Pennington provide case studies for “Sunday to Sunday,” and will be most helpful in seminary, university and adult education for the next generation of “witnesses to the gospel.”

In this forthcoming episode, Father Matt addresses the challenging issue of divorce. His message is one of hope that we come to understand that “underlying everything that Jesus says is this great sense of love, mercy, compassion, and possibility.” Take a look at the brief preview at the top of this page.

Thanks for your encouragement and generous support!  We are close to completing our on-location productions, and in the final editing of five new episodes with transcripts and study guides.

Our goal is to have these completed for viewing in late November; and ready for distribution in early 2019.

If you wish to contribute, please go to Sunday to Sunday.net where we have more information on how to give — either by check or through PayPal.
